Benb's (my husband's) affinity for the necktie is something that I will always love about him. He has a sense of style that is all his own. It doesn't matter if he is wearing swimming trunks or corduroys, everyday is an occasion to don a tie. So his necktie collection is both specific and extensive. Most of his ties come from Goodwill and are from the past. But, I thought that it would be fun to try and make a tie myself. So I bought a pattern (Simplicity 9469) that also includes a shirt, shorts, and pants-- to make later. It just so happened that Benb found a stunning emerald green shirt the other day that definitely needed a special tie. I've had this vintage fabric that he loves and felt that it was up to the task.
Making a necktie is a simple and satisfying project. It feels a bit like oragami because the success of the tie (or at least the one that I made) really depends upon the precision of the folds. I realize that these pictures are slightly dark in areas, but I took them after the sun went down, without a flash (the flash washed everything out) so I hope that you will at least get a feel for the colors and the lovely aquatic fabric.
There will most certainly be more tie making in my future.
